BIOGRAPHIES
About Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe's (1809–49) experiments with the short story made him an enduringly important figure in American literature. He is widely considered the inventor of the detective story, a master of gothic horror, and a pioneer of science fiction. His influence ranges from Conan Doyle to Lovecraft and from Hitchcock to Nabokov. Born in Boston, he was brought up in Richmond, Virginia. Desperate for an income, he served in the army and studied at the West Point military academy before devoting himself purely to writing in the 1830s. As well as the short stories collected in Tales of Mystery and Imagination (1902, Folio 2024), Poe was an accomplished poet, and works such as ‘The Raven’ (1845, Folio 2024)) are widely read today. He also wrote a single novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (1838, Folio 2015), now seen as his masterpiece, though it was received with hostility in Poe's lifetime. Poe was also an essayist and critic, and his ideas on physics, cryptography and other subjects were strikingly ahead of their time. He died in mysterious circumstances aged just 40.
